Planning a trip to Hokkaido?

Weather is one of the most important things to consider. Compared to other parts of Japan, Hokkaido has colder winters, shorter spring and autumn seasons, and relatively comfortable summers.

Based on my experience living in Sapporo, this guide will help you understand what the weather is really like throughout the year — and how to plan your trip accordingly.

Quick Answer: When Is the Best Time to Visit?

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Best for snow and winter experiences
  • Spring (Mar–May): Quiet season with late cherry blossoms
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): Popular and relatively cool
  • Autumn (Sep–Nov): Beautiful foliage and fewer crowds

If you’re visiting for the first time, summer and early autumn are the easiest seasons to travel.

Hokkaido Weather by Season

Winter (December to February)

Winter in Hokkaido is cold, snowy, and sometimes unpredictable.

  • Temperature: around -10°C to 0°C (14°F to 32°F)
  • Heavy snowfall is common

From my experience, what surprised me the most was not just the cold, but the amount of snow. It’s not unusual for train services (JR) to be delayed or even stopped due to heavy snowfall.

This is the best season for:

  • Skiing and snowboarding
  • Snow festivals

Travel tip:
Wearing a coat with a hood or bringing a compact umbrella can be very helpful during sudden snowfall.
Also, always allow extra time for transportation.

Spring (March to May)

Spring arrives later in Hokkaido than in most of Japan.

  • March is still quite cold
  • Cherry blossoms bloom in late April to early May

From my experience, it often still feels like winter until around April.

Spring is short, but it’s a peaceful time with fewer tourists.

Summer (June to August)

Summer in Hokkaido is generally more comfortable than in other parts of Japan, but it has been getting hotter in recent years.

  • Temperature: around 20–30°C (68–86°F)

During the day, it can feel quite hot, so heatstroke prevention is important. However, evenings are often cool and comfortable, which makes a big difference from other parts of Japan.

Many people visit Hokkaido to escape the intense heat of cities like Tokyo and Osaka.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is cool, scenic, and relatively less crowded.

  • September is mild
  • October is peak foliage season in Hokkaido
  • November becomes quite cold

From my experience, it starts getting cold earlier than many visitors expect — sometimes as early as October.

Autumn is beautiful, but the comfortable period doesn’t last long.

Seasonal Characteristics (Important to Know)

One thing that surprised me is how short spring and autumn feel in Hokkaido.

  • It can stay cold until April
  • It starts getting cold again around October

The transition seasons are much shorter compared to other regions in Japan.

My Personal Favorite Season

Personally, I find May to be the most comfortable time of year.

The weather is mild, the crowds are still manageable, and it’s a great time to explore without extreme temperatures.

On the other hand, July and August are considered peak season in Hokkaido, and many domestic tourists travel during this time.

Enjoy Seasonal Food

Each season in Hokkaido offers different local foods, which is another reason why timing your visit matters.

Whether it’s fresh seafood, seasonal produce, or local sweets, there’s always something to enjoy throughout the year.

Final Thoughts

Hokkaido’s weather changes dramatically throughout the year, and each season offers a completely different experience.

From my perspective, understanding the seasonal differences — especially the short spring and autumn, and the heavy winter snow — can make a big difference in how you plan your trip.

Choose the season that fits your travel style, and you’ll be able to enjoy Hokkaido to the fullest.
