If you’re visiting Sapporo, you’ll almost certainly pass through Sapporo Station — and probably ask yourself:
“Where should I eat?”
The station area is packed with excellent restaurants, from fresh sushi to Hokkaido-style soup curry and local desserts.
But there’s one important thing to know first:
Most popular restaurants do NOT take reservations, and long lines are completely normal.
In this guide, I’ll share:
- the best restaurants around Sapporo Station
- realistic waiting situations
- tips to avoid wasting time
- what foreign travelers should know before visiting
As a Sapporo local, these are places I’ve actually visited myself.
Sapporo Station Is Surprisingly Foreigner-Friendly
Compared to many other parts of Sapporo, Sapporo Station is very easy for international travelers.
Most restaurants:

- are used to serving foreign visitors
That said, staff members may only speak limited English.
Simple communication and pointing at menu items usually works perfectly fine.

Before choosing a restaurant, understand this:

- Waiting 30–60 minutes during lunch and dinner hours is common
- Popular places may have even longer waits

The good news:
In many cases, you can leave after registering your name and come back later.
This makes it easy to:
- shop inside the station
- explore nearby areas
- grab coffee while waiting
⚠️ Just be careful not to miss your turn.
